The service

Kiln is a content-management tool for websites. It lets you and the editors you invite make on-page, visual edits to an existing website that you own, and it saves each change as a commit to your own source-code repository on GitHub. On our paid plans, we operate the hosted sign-in service and the GitHub App that make this work, so you do not have to run or maintain that infrastructure yourself. Kiln also offers a free, open-source version you can run entirely on your own.

Kiln edits the files in your repository; it is not a hosting provider for your website and does not store a separate copy of your site as the system of record. Your repository remains the source of truth.

Eligibility and your account

You must be at least 18 years old, or the age of majority where you live, and able to form a binding contract. You sign in through GitHub, and you are responsible for maintaining the security of your GitHub account and for all activity that happens under your Kiln account.

If you use Kiln on behalf of an organization, you represent that you are authorized to bind that organization to these terms, and “you” includes that organization. You are responsible for the editors you invite and for ensuring they comply with these terms.

Subscriptions, billing, and renewal

Paid plans are sold as monthly subscriptions. Current plans and prices are listed on our Pricing page.

Lemon Squeezy is our authorized reseller and merchant of record. When you subscribe, your purchase and payment are processed by Lemon Squeezy, not by us directly. Lemon Squeezy handles billing, receipts, applicable sales tax or VAT, and your payment information, and their name may appear on your statement. Your purchase is also subject to Lemon Squeezy’s own terms.

Subscriptions renew automatically. Each subscription renews monthly at the then-current price and charges your payment method on file until you cancel. You can cancel at any time, which stops future renewals; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period, and you retain access until then. We do not provide notice before each renewal beyond what Lemon Squeezy provides.

We may change plan prices. If we do, the change applies to your next renewal after we give reasonable notice. Refunds are governed by our Refund Policy.

Acceptable use

You agree not to use Kiln to:

We may suspend or limit access that we reasonably believe violates these rules or threatens the service.

Your content and your repository

Your content stays yours. The website content you edit, and the GitHub repository it lives in, belong to you. We claim no ownership of them. By using Kiln, you grant us only the limited permission needed to operate the service for you — for example, to read your pages and to commit your changes to the repository you have connected, through the access you authorize via the GitHub App.

You are responsible for your content and for having the rights to publish it. You can revoke our access at any time by uninstalling the GitHub App or disconnecting the repository. Because every change is a commit to your own repository, your full history remains with you regardless of whether you keep using Kiln.

Intellectual property

Kiln, including its hosted software, the editor, our trademarks, and the look and feel of this website, is owned by Kiln and protected by law. The open-source components of Kiln are licensed under their respective open-source licenses, and nothing here limits your rights under those licenses. Except for those open-source rights and your right to use the service under these terms, we grant you no other license to our intellectual property.

Third-party services

Kiln relies on third-party services to function, including GitHub (sign-in and committing to your repository), Cloudflare (hosting and delivery of the service), and Lemon Squeezy (payments). Your use of those services is subject to their own terms and policies, and we are not responsible for them. See our Privacy Policy for how data is shared with them.

Disclaimer of warranties

The service is provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, whether express, implied, or statutory, including any implied warranties of merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, title, and non-infringement. We do not warrant that the service will be uninterrupted, error-free, or secure, or that it will meet your requirements. You are responsible for maintaining your own backups; because your content lives in your GitHub repository, you already hold a copy.

Limitation of liability

To the maximum extent permitted by law, Kiln will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for any loss of profits, revenue, data, or goodwill, arising out of or relating to your use of the service. Our total liability for any claim relating to the service will not exceed the amount you paid us (or Lemon Squeezy on our behalf) for the service in the twelve months before the event giving rise to the claim. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so some of these may not apply to you.

Termination

You may stop using Kiln at any time by cancelling your subscription and uninstalling the GitHub App. We may suspend or terminate your access if you materially breach these terms, fail to pay, or use the service in a way that risks harm to the service or others. On termination, your right to use the hosted service ends, but your repository and its contents remain entirely yours.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. When we make material changes, we will update the “Last updated” date above and, where appropriate, provide additional notice. Your continued use of the service after a change takes effect means you accept the updated terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of Georgia, United States, without regard to its conflict-of-laws rules. The courts located in the State of Georgia, United States will have jurisdiction over any dispute that is not otherwise resolved, except where applicable law gives you the right to bring a claim elsewhere.
